William Jewett Tucker was the ninth president of Dartmouth College; he served in that capacity from 1893 to 1909. He was born in Griswold, Conn. in 1839. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1861 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1866. In 1875 he received his DD. He was a trustee of Dartmouth College from 1878 to 1909. Hall was born in Granville, Ill. in 1870. He attended Oberlin College and Dartmouth College, receiving his A.B. degree from the latter in 1892. After graduating from college, Hall accepted the position of physical director and football coach at the University of Illinois. At the same time he studied in the office of an Urbana lawyer, so that he was able to enter Harvard Law School as a second year student in 1894. The tenth president of Dartmouth College, Ernest Fox Nichols was in office from 1909 to 1916. He was born in Leavenworth, Kan. in 1869. He received his BS from Kansas Agricultural College in 1888, his MS from Cornell University in 1893, and his ScD from Cornell in 1897. Ernest Martin Hopkins, the eleventh president of Dartmouth College, was born in Dunbarton, N.H. in 1877. He received his AB from Dartmouth in 1901 and his AM from Dartmouth in 1908. From 1901 to 1905 he was secretary to the president of College, and from 1905 to 1910 he was secretary of the College. He served as president from 1916 to 1945. He died in 1964.
